Planning a Bathroom

Group Showroom Development Manager

I have over 20 years experience in the bathroom industry, and in that time I have worked with most of the leading brands available on retail projects as well as new housing/commercial projects. In this article, I explain some of the key things to consider when embarking on a bathroom project.

A new bathroom is not just about choosing sanitary ware, furniture and tiles. There are many important practical factors to consider which will help you to create your dream bathroom.

Our bathroom consultants are highly skilled in guiding you through the design process and product selection, but it often helps prior to a first meeting to give some thought to the following. Call it your planning checklist …

  1. As a starting point think about the end users and their needs – this will influence the practicality and functionality of the bathroom.
  2. Is a shower room sufficient or is there a requirement for a bath, If so, what type of bath is required – large, small, is it for fun bathing, relaxation or therapy and massage?
  3. Consider the size of the room, taking into consideration where the door, window and radiators are.
  4. Is wall hung furniture and WC a requirement for style and easy cleaning? If so, they will need concealing units or stud walls.
  5. Are you considering a wetroom style shower, low profile shower tray or shower enclosure, all of which create a different look and require an individual approach to plumbing and installation.
  6. Have some awareness of the water pressure in your home as this is important when choosing the right type of shower.
  7. The style of the bathroom – is there a preference for a contemporary or a more traditional look?
  8. Tiling or panelling? Each option will influence the overall price.
  9. What type of storage is required in your bathroom - cabinet vs shelving, drawers vs cupboards.
  10. Think about the finishing touches like mirrors, heated towel rails and accessories which can really add to the overall design created.
  11. Last but not least, and probably the most important thing to decide on, is budget. If you have a clear view of what you’d like to spend, the process becomes a lot easier.

In addition to the above, we will help with some of the more technical points to consider such as sizes and dimensions, plus we can liaise with your plumber on your behalf on things like under floor pipe runs including wastes.

To bring your bathroom design to life, we use a 3d Virtual World design package which allows us to create your room and to place product of your choice into it. This is invaluable in the design process, as you can see what the room could look like in various configurations.

Our bathroom consultants would be delighted to talk to you about your project, whatever stage you’re at. We have showrooms in Belfast, Bangor, Lisburn, Newry, Portadown, Coleraine and Larne, so drop in or call us to book an appointment.
